Wild Salmon Event: More of the same
By George Nichols, Courier-Islander April 20, 2011
Only 25 people showed up for the "Mayday for wild salmon" event. It's not that Campbell River doesn't care about wild salmon, we sure do. Heck, if the event really was about wild salmon, I would have been there. But, thanks to the Courier Islander's sneak preview of the event it was quite obvious that this was just another baseless protest and political campaign all wrapped into one.
And indeed it was.
Twenty-five very narrow minded folk, which included North Island NDP and Green Federal candidates, were apparently happy to lend their support to attacks on one of the most important businesses on the North Island - salmon aquaculture. We know the story all too well; wild salmon at the mercy of foreign investment from chiselled chinned Scandinavians, 'mystery' viruses and government conspiracies.
No facts or science actually backs up their claims, yet the fear-mongering and political campaigning continues. I, and apparently most of Campbell River, am not buying it.
