Salmon Farmers raise good points in Letters to Editor

Better balance
By Joel Durand, The Province October 27, 2010
I was quite disappointed to read your one-sided coverage of the protest to "save wild salmon."
Anti-salmon-farming activists were in full force with the same old messages. Where was the voice of the salmon farmer? Was The Province unable to make a phone call that day and get the other side of the story?
B.C. salmon farming is a very positive story in many coastal communities. Not to mention it provides one of the healthiest foods and helps take fishing pressure off wild salmon stocks.
While soggy, wet activists may make a good photo-op, some balance and maybe some scientific fact in your story would also be beneficial for your readers.

Too judgmental
By Kelly Tufford, The Province October 27, 2010
If I was Judge Bruce Cohen, I would be insulted that activists would take me for a fool.
While the protesters have a right to be passionate for wild salmon, they should also be reminded that there are other things going on in our ocean and rivers besides salmon farming.
Did the protesters even notice the lack of riparian habitat on much of the shores of the Fraser River as they paddled into Vancouver to protest? Did they notice the millions of people, cars, concrete and unfiltered drains pouring into the river and ultimately the ocean?
Judge Cohen has a big job ahead of him finding ways to improve the sustainability of the Fraser River sockeye. The last thing he needs is a bunch of noise from non-Canadian activists with blinders on.
