Fraser sockeye shun U.S. waters, fill B.C. nets
Jeff Nagel - Surrey North Delta Leader, Sept. 13, 2014
A quirk of nature has handed B.C. commercial fishermen a huge catch of sockeye salmon this summer, while leaving their American counterparts almost empty handed...Lapointe said unusual Fraser sockeye catches in southeast Alaska and off Haida Gwaii have been strong evidence of a more northerly landfall this year, with many more fish funnelled into Johnstone Strait. The total Fraser sockeye run size is estimated at 20.7 million this year – very close to the mid-range pre-season estimate.

Waiting for nature’s signal
Barb Brouwer - Salmon Arm Observer, Sept. 11, 2014
They’re on the way.  An estimated 10 million sockeye salmon are rallying for the dominant run of their four-year cycle – and some are already on their way. Based on a test fishery conducted below and above the Mission Bridge on the Fraser River, 56 per cent of fish below the bridge were late-run sockeye, many of whom will attract thousands of visitors to the world-famous Salute to the Sockeye on the Adams River.

Sockeye crowd into Birkenhead
Maple Ridge Times, Sept. 13, 2014
...Birkenhead River: Sockeye salmon are entering the Birkenhead River in staggering numbers now. The run was about two weeks late from last year. Chinook salmon are now spawning and should not be disturbed. There are tons of beautiful rainbow trout, bull trout and Dolly Varden with the odd summer-run steelhead caught. The use of egg patterns is highly recommended for fly fishing this time of year. Please be careful when crossing the river not to walk in spawning beds. - See more at: http://www.mrtimes.com/sports/sockeye-crowd-into-birkenhead-1.1356351#sthash.FfF5IoJt.jJ88So41.dpuf

Unusual North Pacific warmth jostles marine food chain
NOAA, Sept. 2014
Scientists across NOAA Fisheries are watching a persistent expanse of exceptionally warm water spanning the Gulf of Alaska that could send reverberations through the marine food web..."Right now it's super warm all the way across the Pacific to Japan," said Bill Peterson, an oceanographer with NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Newport, Ore., who has linked certain ocean indicators to salmon returns.

Pink salmon. The muffin stumps of the Pacific Northwest?
Alaska Salmon Ranching on Friday, September 5, 2014
...Alaska has a surplus of pink salmon. In fact, if they didn’t catch another pink salmon, they would have enough to satisfy demand for the next three years, says Bruce Schactler, food aid program coordinator for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute. Uncle Sam saves the day. Again. For the second time this year, the Department of Agriculture will buy up cans of pink salmon. The 2014 bailout now totals about $33 million dollars.
