Norway fish farmers unfairly slagged
Letter to the Editor, Times Colonist, May 09, 2010
During anti-fish-farm activist Alexandra Morton's Get Out Migration trek I heard her refer repeatedly to these "Norwegian companies" and say they should just get out of the province and go back "where they came from.
I also watched supporters display a Norwegian flag that had been defaced with big depictions of black sea lice and the words "NORWAY Open-Net Fish Farms OUT!"
I believe that most people in B.C. would be horrified if they saw protesters do that to the Canadian flag, especially if it was being done by someone from another country.
But I don't hear the larger community or media condemning this behaviour when it happens against the salmon-farming companies because they're supposedly from Norway.
Some companies are headquartered there, but who have set up large businesses over here, hiring Canadians and pouring hundreds of millions to dollars into jobs and the economy to produce fish that are equally-obviously in high demand.
