Fish site: 18 March 2015
US - The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) brought together a distinguished panel for this year’s Seafood Expo North America to join in the discussion on what drives environmental and social responsibility in aquaculture...Clare Backman, Public Affairs Director at Marine Harvest Canada, said the company spent many years making fundamental changes to its business to prepare for the strict ASC standards. “For example, we invested in new high-strength netting material that keeps our fish in and eliminates the need for chemical antifoulants, and we’ve reduced marine meal in our fish feed so we are now net producers of fish protein,” Mr Backman said.

...Dr. Richard Beamish, an emeritus scientist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said the NOAA study suggests a significant shift of oceanic conditions is taking place. “Some of us, me in particular, believe there are these major climate, ocean events which we’ve been calling regimes,” he said. “We had a major regime shift in ’77 and then in ’89, probably another around 1998 … and since they [are] occurring roughly every 10 years … most of us have been expecting we’d see a change.” Dr. Beamish said regime shifts can have a dramatic impact on salmon production, causing stocks to crash.
