CKNW, Simi Sara Show, April 3, 2014
Yesterday Simi spoke with Dr. Craig Orr, executive Director of Watershed Watch Salmon Society, about the news that the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association recently announced their intent to increase open-net farmed salmon production in B.C. waters by 43% (to 100,000 metric tonnes) by 2020 with a further increase to 150,000 metric tonnes by 2025. Canada: A new study suggests that the hundreds of millions of pink salmon in the Pacific Ocean- many of which originate at Alaskan aquaculture facilities- represent a risk to other wildlife, including sea bird. Other reports by the likes of former fish farmer Bill Vernon from British Columbia have suggested that the output of billions of salmon from hatcheries and spawning channels around the Pacific Ocean might be jeopardizing the well-being of truly wild salmon due to the competition for available food resources.
