Long-term commitment and innovation recognized at the 15th aquaculture awards

March 23, 2014  People who have helped improve the aquaculture industry in BC through innovation and community support were the focus of the 15th Annual BC Aquaculture Achievement Awards night.

“There are so many people who have helped our industry grow and improve over the years,” said Cory Percevault, president of Positive Aquaculture Awareness (PAA). “We were pleased to be able to recognize them this year for how they’ve helped the communities where their companies operate, and the innovations they’ve made that have helped all of BC fish farmers.”

The Positive Aquaculture Awareness society held its 15th annual dinner and awards night on Mar.22, 2014 at the Eagles Hall in Campbell River. The sold-out event featured a delicious farmed seafood dinner, a silent auction, a heads and tails raffle and the highlight of the night, awards presentations.

The 2014 award recipients were:

Business of the Year Award: Grieg Seafood BC Ltd.

Environment Award: Jeff Muma, Marine Harvest Canada

Leadership Award: Jason Pearson, Cermaq Canada

Long-Term Achievement Award : Daryl Misky, Marine Harvest Canada

Outstanding Employee Performance Award: Steve Fukui, Cermaq Canada

Outstanding Manager Performance Award- Megan Sorby, Sable Fish Canada

Rookie of the Year Award: Alvin Mati, Creative Salmon Company Ltd.

Outstanding Contributor to our Communities Award: Dave Bailey, Creative Salmon Company Ltd and Roger King, Marine Harvest Canada

Honorable Mention: Dr. Ray Peterson | Mary Ellen Walling | Dr. Sonja Saksida

As in previous years, the awards night also provides an opportunity to raise money in support of important local not-profits that help BC’s wild salmon.

A total of $1,000.00 was raised and donated to the Campbell River Salmon Foundation to assist in its habitat restoration of local rivers.

The evening featured a fantastic door prize - return transportation and an overnight stay for two to Homfray Lodge, provided by Corilair and Homfray Lodge.

The dinner and awards night is annual fundraiser for PAA, a grassroots organization which is dedicated to promoting awareness of British Columbia’s aquaculture industry through public education and community involvement.
