It’s quick, easy and really healthy – and this year fresh salmon will get some special attention at the EAT! Vancouver food show, May 30 to June 1 at BC Place.
To raise the profile of this nutritious food, the BC Salmon Farmers Association will be partnering with the Heart and Stroke Foundation to raise funds for the foundation and awareness about the heart health benefits of BC-raised salmon. EAT! Vancouver attendees will also learn how to prepare easy, healthy salmon at home from renowned Chef Dave Ryan.
“My goal is to share some tips for an easy, healthy salmon recipe that people will love for the summer,” said Chef Ryan who also is a member and coach of National Culinary Team Canada. “Hopefully they’ll be inspired to bring more heart-healthy salmon onto their home menus.”
Chef Ryan will be on the Flavours World stage at 5:15pm and 7:45pm on Saturday May 31 and noon on Sunday, June 1, preparing a heart healthy salmon recipe step-by-step. Meanwhile, the BCSFA will be sharing samples of both fresh grilled and smoked salmon as well asselling packages of fresh fillets throughout the event. All proceeds up to $5,000 from fish sales will go to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, to help in their research and education work.
“Salmon is a great addition to your diet and it’s important for us to help inform the public about the kind of health benefits it has,” said Janice Krall, BC & Yukon Heart and Stroke Foundation Area Manager for Vancouver Island/Powell River/Gulf Islands. “We’re glad this healthy food will get special attention at this year’s Eat Vancouver event.”
Eating an oily fish like salmon high in Omega 3s regularly (two-three times a week) can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and help manage arthritis and other auto-immune diseases.
“We believe in the important work the Heart and Stroke Foundation is doing – the health benefits of salmon is something our farmers are very aware of and want people to know more about,” said Jeremy Dunn, Executive Director of the BCSFA. “Pairing up with Chef Ryan to teach how it can be prepared is a great way to empower people to make healthy choices.”
The BCSFA represents salmon farm companies and those who supply services and supplies to the industry. Salmon-farming provides for 6,000 direct and indirect jobs while contributing $800-million to the provincial economy each year.
