At the BC Salmon Farmers Association Annual General Meeting today, Jose Villalon spoke about how salmon farms are an important part of feeding the future
Villalon was the World Wildlife Fund's aquaculture director until recently. While with the WWF, he helped establish the Salmon Aquaculture Dialogues, which resulted in the creation of the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).
The ASC has published its standards for certification of salmon farming, and earlier this year a consortium of salmon farming companies, including Cermaq, announced they would be working towards achieving this standard for all farms by 2020.
Villalon had high praise for this consortium, the Global Salmon Initiative, pointing out that it's the first partnership of its kind in the world bringing food producers together in a "pre-competitive" relationship with the common goal of addressing environmental and sustainability concerns.
Villalon gave the same presentation today as he did to the Vancouver Aquarium on Tuesday, which is available in its entirety here.
The world is facing a future with an even bigger population than it has today. How will enough food be produced to feed us all? Join us and our special guest speaker, Jose Villalon, Sustainability Director at Nutreco, for his perspective on this important global issue.
