Letter submitted to Editor of the Vancouver Province
by Mary Ellen Walling, Oct. 26, 2010
I was very concerned to read Monday's Vancouver Province which featured anti-fish farm protestors.
My disappointment stems not from the subject matter but the fact that no comment was sought from the protest's target, British Columbia’s salmon farmers. This unbalanced coverage ignored the voices of 6,000 people who work in the salmon farming industry which contributes $800 million to the BC economy every year.
As the Cohen Commission will hear, salmon farmers who live and work in coastal communities are as concerned as all British Columbians about the health of the wild salmon stocks. Ou strong farm management practises and focus on growing healthy fish are a priority for all of our farmers
Narrowly focused campaigns do little to help us understand what is happening in our oceans. Wild salmon survival is a complicated issue with many different perspectives. We urge you to consider these moving forward.
Sincerely
Mary Ellen Walling
Executive Director, BC Salmon Farmers Association
