The little creek that could

Dallas elementary kids help out pink salmon long overlooked
By Mike Youds, Daily News Staff Reporter
Residents along Campbell Creek in Dallas were enjoying their backyard a couple of months ago when they heard a splash in the water from behind a fence. When they investigated, the source of the commotion turned out to be pink salmon swimming upstream to spawn. Until that point, no one in the neighbourhood realized that the little stream could even support salmon. Unfortunately, the channel was so choked with waste and debris that there was limited spawning potential.

Bowen Hatchery recieves first-ever Pink salmon eggs
Meribeth Deen - Bowen Island Undercurrent, November 15, 2013
On Wednesday, Rob Bell-Irving from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans brought 100 thousand ‘eyed’ Pink salmon eggs to the Bowen Island Fish Hatchery. “Until now, we really haven’t had enough Pink eggs to be able to give them away,” said Bell-Irving. “These come from the Tenderfoot Hatchery in Squamish, and the last really great Pink salmon year in Squamish was in the late 1960s. We’ve been working since the 1990s to replenish our stocks, and this year we’ve seen real success with both a commercial fishery and sport fishery for Pink salmon in Howe Sound.

Editorial: Salmon come back strong
Victoria Times Colonist, November 14, 2013
Winding behind a shopping mall, assaulted by oil spills and littered with junk, Colquitz Creek seems an unlikely candidate for an environmental success story. But thanks to the efforts of dedicated people, salmon are swimming up the stream to spawn.. ..Between November 2011 and December 2012, at least five spills contaminated the creek with heating oil, insulating oil from power lines, hydraulic fluid and diesel…. It has taken decades of work by volunteers, governments and industry to clean up the waters around Greater Victoria. To keep the recovered streams healthy, all of us have to think about the pollutants we are flushing into our streams.

Colquitz Creek salmon run a fine kettle of fish
Sandra McCulloch / Times Colonist, November 11, 2013
Despite all the threats it faces, Colquitz Creek in Saanich is thriving as a home for salmon.
Colquitz is an urban stream under tremendous pressure from homes along its bank, storm drains that empty into it and runoff from farming and light industry. It weathered a number of spills in 2010-11, when some fish died but many others survived. On one day last week, volunteers counted 449 coho and two cutthroat trout — more than the entire run last year.

Columbia River:

Video: Enough to walk across their backs
by Christine Pratt, Nov. 12, 2013
This year’s return of fall chinook surpassed 1 million fish, more than three times the nearly 300,000 fish that returned last year. The species spawns in the Hanford Reach, the only remaining free-flowing stretch of the Columbia River below Priest Rapids. The record-breaking return appears to confirm the old Native American legend that returning salmon were once so numerous that a person could cross a stream by walking on their backs.
