Each year about this time I report on the returns of salmon to the hatcheries in Area 14 waters. This year the report will be on two levels...The DFO is not the most popular federal agency in the minds of many people these days; however I would like to compliment the dedicated people who work at the field level in our large DFO hatcheries. They are doing a first rate professional job in face of decreasing budgets and physical challenges due to lack of support services.

The festival is timed to coincide with the arrival of thousands of bald eagles, which migrate to the Harrison and Fraser River confluence every winter to feed on spawning salmon.

Political dignitaries observed the day-today work being undertaken to rebuild endangered Cultus Lake sockeye salmon at the Cultus Lake Salmon Research Laboratory last Thursday. Mark Strahl, Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP, and Randy Kamp, parliamentary secretary to Gail Shea, minister of fisheries and oceans, were given a tour of the facilities by Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff.
