“Get Out Migration” Sinks in Wild Salmon Corridor

PAA Release,  April 27, 2010, “Get Out Migration” Sinks in Wild Salmon Corridor

If you blinked you would have missed it.

What was promoted as a “flotilla” of massive support for a recent anti-salmon farming campaign, quickly turned into a small gathering of the usual suspects.

The “Get Out Migration”, organized by American activist Alexandra Morton, is a two week long protest walk and is asking for the “removal of salmon farms” in British Columbia.

Positive Aquaculture Awareness (PAA) announced today that the protest group traveled through Okisollo Channel, located just north of Campbell River. Branded as “Wild Salmon Narrows”, the protesters were expecting the support of 30-40 boats, but instead just eight boats showed up.

“The salmon farmers working in the area essentially doubled the number of protesters”, commented PAA President Cory Percevault. “The usual anti-salmon suspects were there which included members of the U.S. based protest group Pure Salmon.”

Contrary to false reports in a few media outlets, the protesters did not approach the farms and did not serve so called “eviction” notices.

“These activists could care less if science and fact doesn’t back up their outrageous claims. One protester named Jodi Eriksson actually stated for A Channel News that sea lice aren’t present on juvenile salmon in areas away from farms – that is simply a lie and contrary to scientific fact.  There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that these few farms are a threat to wild salmon, yet they ask for the elimination of hundreds of jobs – this is outrageous.”

“The docile nature of the protest was actually quite surprising”, says Percevault, “Perhaps they are as bored of these protests as we are?”

PAA is a grassroots group of aquaculture workers and suppliers formed in 1998 to provide accurate information about a business that provides thousands of jobs for British Columbians. For more information visit www.FarmFreshSalmon.org
